Toolbox Northeast Corridor

Project: Toolbox Northeast Corridor
Client: Samenwerkingsverband Regio Eindhoven
Year: 2012

An important project in the Brainport area is the North East Corridor. The North East Corridor project consists of the upgrading of the provincial road N279 to a 4 lane highway and the construction of a new highway connection between Eindhoven and Helmond.
The Toolbox Northeast Corridor is an agenda-setting study, that brings the opportunities and constraints of possible routes into focus. The problem is discussed from the perspective of the landscape (water, ecology, cultural and recreation) and from the perspective of the road user (image of the area, and readability of the landscape orientation). The toolkit provides guidelines for the design of new and existing routes in relation to their environment.
Brainport: the best of both worlds, both city and countryside, nature and recreational areas

Brainport Avenue, the west corridor and Brainport Parkway, the northeast corridor

Do's and don'ts historical agricultural fields
Historical agricultural fields: cherish the spatial relationship between convex fields and villages

Historical agricultural fields: no avenue planting at the intersection of fieldcomplex

Historical agricultural fields: a light curving incision strengthens the character of the convex field and makes the road less visible from the surrounding

Sunken position in a fieldcomplex. Cherish the spatial relationship between convex fieldcomplexes and villages. Create vistas on the countryside and landmarks.

Do's and don'ts river valleys
River valley: integration of a traditional styled wooden or brick bridge and strengthening of the scenic and ecological structure

The rivervalleys: don’t  cross the rivervalley diagonally

The rivervalleys: perpendicular crossing of the rivervalley

Bridging the rivervalleys: bridge over the entire rivervalley, don’t block the rivers ecosystem

Do's and don'ts landscape of young reclamations
Landscape of young reclamations: connect with the big size and scale of the landscape

Landscape of young reclamations, forest areas: noise barriers incorporated in new forest

Landscape of young reclamations, forest areas: wide median with forest

Landscape of young reclamations, forest areas: sunken position with ecoduct

Landscape of young reclamations, forest areas: sunken position and ecoduct with shared recreational use

The 'slow' water canal remains outside the influence of the 'fast' highway, an aqueduct has compared to a bridge less spatial impact on the landscape
